How to Safely Hang Outdoor Christmas Lights

how to hang christmas lights on house

Outdoor lights should always be plugged into circuits protected by ground-fault circuit interrupters (GFCIs), which will reduce the risk of electrocution. To avoid having dozens of cords running back to the house, try using power stakes, which are portable devices that bring power where you need it with just a single cable to the house. There are several areas of your home you should measure before hanging lights to determine how many strands you'll need.

Track Down Your Power Outlets

Outlining your eaves and windows and festooning your trees and shrubbery with decorative lights is a sure way to enliven your home for the holidays. But hanging outdoor holiday lights can be a less than cheerful experience, particularly when you’re faced with a teetering ladder and tangles of light strings that don’t work. Unlike decorating your Christmas tree, the best time for hanging Christmas and outdoor holiday lights is before your weather turns wet and cold. Not only is it easier and more comfortable to work outdoors in mild weather, but it is also safer. Safely climbing ladders and working along the eaves of a roof can be a dangerous challenge in bad weather.

These can be used to create all sorts of interesting effects, from snowflakes falling across your house to Santa Claus flying overhead. If you’re looking for something a little more durable, then C9 or C7 bulbs might be a better option. These are the traditional large glass bulbs that you often see on houses and businesses. They’re a bit more expensive than mini lights, but they’re also much less likely to break if they’re dropped or stepped on. Along the roofline, Heath installed String-A-Long 300 Light Clear Icicle Light set, which is manufactured by the General Electric Company. To secure the lights to the roofline, Heath used universal shingle/gutter light clips, which can be found at The Home Depot.

Check the Weather

Use white cords for light-colored gutters and window moldings. Hanging Christmas lights can be a bit of a dangerous proposition—especially if it involves a large ladder and a lot of time on the roof. Follow these smart safety tips to help you hang your Christmas lights. In order to safely plug in the outdoor lights, Heath installed a GFCI outdoor outlet and protected it using an Expandable Weatherproof In-Use Cover, which is manufactured by TayMac. Most light strands, whether LED or incandescent, have a pair of fuses in the plug behind a small sliding plastic cover. Usually, can you tell if a fuse is blown just by looking at the filament inside.

How to Hang Christmas Lights Outdoors Safely

For a well-distributed glow along each bough, secure strands to the branches using two-inch pieces of floral wire. Follow our guide to hanging lights on a Christmas tree for step-by-step instructions. Along the tree Heath protects extension cords with outdoor extension cord covers. To turn all the lights on and off at the right times, he uses a timer.

Adding holiday lights to greenery can be tricky because it’s hard to get lights to stay evenly spaced across supple, contoured surfaces. With net lights, there’s a bright white (usually) LED at every netting intersection, so it’s easy to drape lights over the shrub for instant illumination. Hang net lights from fences, stonewalls, and porch railings, too. Unless you want to trudge through the snow to plug and unplug your lights twice a day, you’ll want to use lighting timers to automatically turn on and off your display. Depending on how your lights are strung together and just how illuminated your house is, you may need multiple timers. Take care to sync them carefully, and be sure you’re only using timers that are rated for outdoor use.

Multiple strings of same-toned lights and inconspicuous hooks or tiny tacks bring form to your vision. Knowing how to hang Christmas lights to the best advantage in any situation you might use them is a skill every Christmas decorator should acquire. Our guide has the details on creating displays with an even spread of light through Christmas tree branches, around a window, on a house, and more. Now that you know how to put up your Christmas lights, it’s important to make sure you’re doing it in a safe way. This means using the right type of lights for your situation, being careful when handling them, and making sure they’re properly plugged in and secured.

After assessing your existing inventory, and with measurements that show how you might need to supplement, it’s time to buy Christmas lights. The brighter you want your house to be, the more bulbs per strand you’ll want. For consistency, you’ll probably also need to decide whether you’ll go with incandescent or LED lights.

Always have a few extra strands on hand

You'll need some plastic clips, a waterproof timer, and a whole lot of string lights. In fact, there are quite a few different types to choose from. The most popular are mini lights, also known as string lights. These come in a variety of colors and sizes, and they’re relatively inexpensive. But they can be a bit delicate, so be careful when handling them. This handy site allows you to input your address and view a map of all the houses in your neighborhood that have registered their holiday lights displays.

Save Money on Holiday Lights

Or, if math isn't your strong suit, just wrap a string up the column and then lay it flat to measure. Do you want to use white lights that are clean and timeless, color lights that are fun and festive, or a combination of the two? If you’re going with white, just remember that not all white lights are the same – some are a cool blue, while others are a warm yellow. Be sure to closely read the packaging if you want your white lights to match. With countless Christmas lights on the market, how do you choose?

String Lights Aren’t Just for Christmas: 13 Ideas to Decorate With Them Year-Round

String lights are great for straight lines as well as wrapping around columns for that candy-cane effect. Icicle lights look terrific hanging from eaves and rooflines. Pathway lights with lawn stakes are terrific along sidewalks. And spotlights are a safe and colorful solution for large trees that may be tricky to decorate with light strands, especially when trying to reach the upper branches. Next, measure the parts of your home you wish to decorate to determine the feet of light strands needed.

However, incandescent lights offer a warm yellow glow that their competition can't match. Not all plug-in Christmas lights are the same, and the names and styles can be confusing. It's helpful to remember that "C" stands for either "cone" or "candle," due to their bulbous shape. The higher the C-number, the larger the size, from C3 to C9. Here's how to choose the right size and shape Christmas lights for your holiday decorating needs. 'A vibrant vignette infuses a space with bright dimensions and is super-easy to create.

We'll show you how to make hanging, storing and setting up holiday lights easier. 'A festive light installation adds a glowy dose of spirit to an interior and puts a cozy new lens on the traditional holiday light show,' says Kelly. 'Use an entire wall as a canvas for long strings of simple, white holiday lights. There's nothing worse than hanging up Christmas lights or painstakingly wrapping them around every branch just to be met with absolutely nothing when you finally plug them in. Even if not all the bulbs are out, any break in the lights is not what we're looking for during the holidays.

Repair Holiday Lights

Know where the outlets are and determine if you'll need to run exterior-grade extension cords from the outlet to the final destination where the Christmas lights will hang. For front porches, try plastic zip ties, or wider plastic clips made specifically to hang lights and garland from standard deck railings. Use yard stakes for pathway lights and for spotlights on trees.

Follow these tips, and you'll be sipping eggnog and staring at your very own Christmas lights in no time. Before you make plans to begin hanging your lights, consult the forecast. The last thing you would want to do is get all the lights unpacked, strung all over the garage, only to look outside and see pouring rain.

How to Safely Hang Christmas Lights for a Merry Holiday Display

“Mini-lights,” as the name implies, utilize miniature bulbs; they are popular because they are inexpensive to buy and to power, thanks to their cool-burning 1.5- or 2.5-volt bulbs. The larger C-9 and C-7 bulbs become very hot and consume considerably more energy than the same number of mini-lights. When buying lights, opt for shorter rather than longer light strings. That way, if a string stops working or becomes damaged, you can replace it more easily and affordably.

Once you’ve done that, you can start brainstorming ideas for how to best arrange your lights. The last thing you want is to get all of your lights put up only to find out they don’t work. Before you do anything else, make sure to test all of your lights.

The gear you need for do-it-yourself holiday decorating done right. In any case, you’ll be glad you have extra fuses on hand rather than making one more trip to the store during the holidays. With so many lighting options to choose from, pick the look that’s right for you.

Work the light string around the window by fitting it onto the hooks. The color temperature indicates how cool or warm the light is. If a strand breaks or you decide to extend your decoration into other areas, you'll have backup. Gather the extra bulbs that come with the strand in a zip-top bag in case you need to replace any throughout the season. It’s a great option if you want your display to be interactive and fun for both kids and adults. This trend has only become more accessible as technology has improved.

Always check the condition of lights before hanging them and switch them on to check they work. It’s also a good idea to have a plan for what you’ll do if something goes wrong. That way, you can be sure that your display will stay safe and look great all season long. Doing so will make it easier for you to figure out exactly how many lights you need and where they need to go. And it will save you a lot of time and frustration later on.

The former are typically less expensive, but the latter will last longer. Remember, you will need more (or longer) strands if you plan on winding them around posts or plants. Consider using net lights for bushes and shrubs, which takes the guesswork out of how many strands are needed to cover the branches. Map out where your lights will go and make sure you have enough working lights for that area.

She explained that some people will be very specific with their desires, like selecting a photo of the exact car they want, or the perfect house, but that isn't how manifestation works. There needs to be an element of trust in the universe giving them what they attract. Like woods in Edenbridge, where I stood meditating under a tree in the pouring rain.

Movie and TV Show Houses in Valley Village

However, I think one of the homes that looks the most different is the house from Pee Wee’s Big Adventure. Over the years the color of the house has changed several times, the white picket fence is gone, but the unique shape is still recognizable. The House from Pee Wee’s Big Adventure is located at 1848 Oxley Street in South Pasadena. I wish I could visit the iconic Braverman house that Zeke and Camile owned on Parenthood but that was built on the Universal Backlots. However, there are locations where the many other characters lived that can be visited.

This is likely due to the film's shocking and twist-filled ending, which we're going to break down in detail. Despite being filmed in 2010, the thriller House at the End of the Street wasn't released until 2012. When it went into production, its star, Jennifer Lawrence, was an up-and-coming young actress. By the time it finally came out, she was an Oscar nominee and headlining The Hunger Games.

It was a very short drive from Casa Walsh and was close to Eaton Canyon where I was hiking later that day. This house is picturesque and has a fabulous fairytale vibe to it. In the movie, Ryan ends up killing many young women, who he is held hostage as Carrie Anne.

The sheriff soon informs Dalton that Brandt has kidnapped Ellie and will exchange her for the money. Road House is a 2024 American action film directed by Doug Liman, written by Anthony Bagarozzi and Chuck Mondry and produced by Joel Silver. It is a remake of the 1989 film of the same name and stars Jake Gyllenhaal, Daniela Melchior, Conor McGregor (in his feature film debut), J.

The 1978 film version of Grease, starring John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John, celebrated its 40th anniversary last year. Based on the 1971 musical of the same name, Grease tells the story of a 1950s high school romance between a “greaser,” Danny Zuko (Travolta) and Sandy Olsson (Newton-John). The Tujunga Canyons north of Los Angeles have been the site of UFO abduction tales for decades. So it is more than fitting than the San Gabriel Mountains were the location of the sleepy Seven Hills neighborhood where the typical 1982 family housed the titular alien in Steven Spielberg's E.T.

Ryan is sent away to a mental institution at the end, as Elissa and Sarah relocate to another house, leaving the haunted place forever. Elissa and her mom had just moved to a new neighborhood to start fresh. But turns out the house at the end of their street has a dark past. As Elissa settles in, she starts to hang out with Ryan, who lives nearby. But things start to get weird, and it seems like there’s more to the story than meets the eye. The movie centers on Elissa (Lawrence) and her mother, Sarah (Elisabeth Shue), who move down the street from a house that was the site of a horrific double homicide.

The owners of this South Pasadena residence - located a five-minute walk from the Century House - have embraced its status as an iconic horror movie location. Visitors are invited to pose in the same spot where Laurie Strode (Jamie Lee Curtis, in her film debut) waits for a ride in the original Halloween. Not just his parents, Ryan is also alleged to have killed his Aunt by the localities of the place he lives.

I visited Garry Marshall’s grave the day after I came to see this house so it felt like a very full-circle moment. I grew up a big fan of Hilary Duff and always watched her movies. So when a friend of mine posted a picture of this house I knew I had to see it in person.

Throughout the film, Elissa befriends Ryan (Max Thieriot), the sole survivor of the murder, who now lives alone in the infamous house. As their friendship deepens, Elissa begins to uncover dark secrets about Ryan’s past and his family. The tension builds as she realizes that not everything is as it seems. Turns out that house was the scene of a double murder four years earlier, in which a young girl hacked up Mom and Dad one night. In any case, the kid was presumed drowned, but her body never found. Local teens like to feed rumors that she’s still alive, wandering the forest at night, while their parents just bitch about the notorious crime’s drag on property values.

Elissa drives to his house, finds tampons in the garbage, and discovers the secret room. Ryan restrains "Carrie-Anne" as Elissa finds blue contact lenses and Peggy's wallet in the kitchen. Ryan has kidnapped Peggy and attempted to make her look like his sister. Although filming had been completed in 2010, the film was not released until 2012 by Relativity Media. Despite a negative response from critics, the film was a moderate commercial success.

The extended edition increased the length of certain scenes in the final cut by a few seconds and the amount of violence, blood, and gore was increased by a small amount. Poltergeist is centered around a house possessed by supernatural beings in the fictional Cuesta Verde community. The Freeling family home can actually be found in the suburbs of Simi Valley. A six-foot scale model was used for the residence’s implosion in the film’s final sequence. The real dwelling remains very much intact and looks identical to its onscreen counterpart. Sky News analysis shows someone on £16,000 a year will pay £607 more in total - equivalent to more than three months of average household spending on food.

The gorgeous dwelling was originally constructed in 1887, the same year that Monrovia was incorporated as a city. The house was also where Betty White lived in the 2010 rom-com You Again. The gates to a former 1916 Mediterranean estate that once belonged to lumber magnate Charles Cobb masked as the entrance to Morningside Cemetery in the 1979 supernatural thriller, Phantasm. After Cobb’s death in 1939, the estate went through a succession of different owners until it was finally purchased by the Marx Brothers. They demolished the residence in 1959, but left the entrance gates unaltered.

They are disturbed to discover the house they are moving into is on the same street as the house in which a girl named Carrie-Anne Jacobson killed her parents four years prior. Ryan now lives alone in the house and is hated by his neighbors; Bill Weaver, a local police officer, is his only supporter.

He blames himself both for his sister's condition and his parent's death. Poorly conceived, clumsily executed, and almost completely bereft of scares, House at the End of the Street strands its talented star in a film as bland as its title. The film had its theatrical premiere in the United States on September 21, 2012, and was released in Canada on the same date. The film was not released theatrically in Sweden or Spain and was released direct-to-video on January 30, 2013, in Sweden and on August 28, 2013, in Spain.

Hollywood’s historic Wattles Mansion was used as the demon-possessed home where Jonathan Graves lived in the 1985 horror-comedy, Ghoulies. The property, which was built as the winter residence for wealthy Nebraska banker Gurdon Wattles, is currently owned by the Los Angeles Department of Parks and Recreation and its grounds are accessible to the public. The fence is also new since The Brady Bunch was filmed, added when the owner grew frustrated with rude people walking up and peering into her living room. The house made its debut in the second episode of The Brady Bunch and appeared in almost every one of the 115 episodes that ensued. The Brady Bunch house is located at Dilling Street in North Hollywood. Several houses in the Los Angeles area provided locations for some of your favorite TV shows.

Despite the changes, the two-story office building should still be recognizable to horror movie buffs. Known today as the Century House, the building was named South Pasadena Cultural Landmark No. 34 and is located just steps from the South Pasadena Station of the Metro L Line (Gold). The 2012 psychological thriller film “House at the End of the Street” left many viewers scratching their heads with its ambiguous ending. Directed by Mark Tonderai, the movie stars Jennifer Lawrence as Elissa, a teenager who moves with her mother Sarah (played by Elisabeth Shue) to a new house in a small town. As they settle into their new home, they discover that the neighboring house was the site of a gruesome double murder.

Fanciful Fifties-themed diner Jack Rabbit Slim's, for example, never actually existed. Dozens of Los Angeles locations are featured in La La Land, including the famed Griffith Observatory, Angels Flight, and more mundane locations like Mia's apartment, shot in Long Beach. In short, this is because NI cuts are more than offset by other tax rises. At last month's budget, the chancellor announced NI will be cut by a further 2p - so some workers will pay 8% of their earnings instead of the 12% if was before autumn. Check them out this morning and we'll be back on Monday with rolling news and features. The next Bank of England decision on rates comes on 9 May - and pretty much no one is expecting a cut from the 16-year high of 5.25% at that stage. "The UK is coming out of technical recession. Inflation is falling more convincingly. Pay settlements are following inflation expectations. And crucially, real policy rates in the UK will be higher than in the US." Swap rates - which dictate how much it costs to lend money - have risen on the back of higher than expected US inflation data, and concerns this could delay interest rate cuts there.

La La Land is in my top five favorite movies and easily my favorite movie set in Los Angeles, closely followed by Valentine’s Day. I have visited several filming locations from La La Land including Angels Flight, the Smoke House Restaurant, and the Lighthouse Cafe. The apartment that Mia lives in is located out in Long Beach and is stunning!

In conclusion, “House at the End of the Street” is a gripping thriller with an enigmatic ending that leaves audiences pondering its meaning. The film’s exploration of dark secrets, psychological trauma, and familial bonds makes it a thought-provoking watch. Whether you interpret Elissa’s escape as a triumph or a temporary respite, one thing is certain – this movie will leave you questioning what lies behind closed doors in your own neighborhood. In the climactic final act of the movie, it is revealed that Ryan has a twin sister named Carrie Anne who was believed to have died in the murder-suicide committed by their parents. However, it turns out that Carrie Anne is still alive and has been living in secret in an underground cellar beneath their house.

All of the houses on this list are private residences, not tourist attractions. Please behave the same way you'd want people to act around your own house. Don't disturb its occupants, knock on the door, peer in their windows or take souvenirs. Surprise cult hit Drive was shot in several Los Angeles locations that are off the beaten path for most filmmakers who depict the city.

"About a year ago, there was something happening and I thought we just need two grand to cover the expense," Jamie, a former dancer from London, told me. "The following day £2,000 landed in my account." It also assumes you are not self-employed and are under pension age... The change, announced by the chancellor in his March budget, impacts around 27 million payroll employees across the UK - starting this pay day. The Viaduct has got a long film history that pays tribute to LA.

While Lawrence is such a magnetic presence that she holds your attention even as the story takes a dive, the actress also highlights the weakness of the script. Why a girl as savvy and street-smart as Elissa would stick around in situations long after the danger alarm has sounded makes less and less sense, even within the elastic logic of the genre. And Lawrence projects such kick-ass strength that she seems a match for any menace. Working from a story by Jonathan Mostow, Loucka samples from a variety of sources that range from Psycho to The People Under the Stairs. But from the moment Plot Point A is disclosed in a big reveal almost exactly a half-hour in, the film becomes first inane, then dull and then ludicrous.

Some members of the president's staff are located in the adjacent Old Executive Office Building in the former State War and Navy Building, sometimes known as the Eisenhower Executive Office Building. Few people realize the size of the White House, since much of it is below ground or otherwise minimized by landscaping. Two colonnades, one on the east and the west, were designed by Jefferson connect the residence to the West Wing and the East Wing. The residence houses the president's home, and rooms for ceremonies and official entertaining.

The Residence

Since the renovation after the War of 1812, further renovations have been done like the restoration works done during the Kennedy years. Unlike in the previous century where it was easy to access the White House, today one has to be invited by the President and then go through screening by the Secret Service. Thomas Jefferson added his own personal touches upon moving in a few months later, installing two water closets and working with architect Benjamin Latrobe to add bookending terrace-pavilions. Having transformed the building into a more suitable representation of a leader’s home, Jefferson held the first inaugural open house in 1805, and also opened its doors for public tours and receptions on New Year’s Day and the Fourth of July. The general layout of the White House grounds today is based on the 1935 design by Frederick Law Olmsted Jr. of the Olmsted Brothers firm, commissioned by President Franklin D. Roosevelt. During the Kennedy administration, the White House Rose Garden was redesigned by Rachel Lambert Mellon.

Citizens of a foreign countries can arrange tours through their embassy. Contrary to a popular myth that the building was painted white to hide scorch marks after the fire in 1814, the residence was first painted white in 1798 to protect the exterior from weather damage.

Why the New York Appeals Court Judges Reversed Harvey Weinstein’s Conviction

Rosalynn Carter, in 1977, was the first to place her personal office in the East Wing and to formally call it the "Office of the First Lady". The East Wing was built during World War II in order to hide the construction of an underground bunker to be used in emergencies. The bunker has come to be known as the Presidential Emergency Operations Center. Ever since Theodore Roosevelt moved his workspace from the residence to the newly built West Wing in 1902, the two-story West Wing has been home to the U.S. presidential offices. In addition to the Oval Office, the West Wing complex includes the Situation Room, Cabinet Room, Roosevelt Room and press briefing room, among others.

The Roosevelt renovation was planned and carried out by the famous New York architectural firm McKim, Mead and White. Roosevelt’s successor, President William Howard Taft, had the Oval Office constructed within an enlarged office wing. Throughout history, the White House has been attacked on various occasions and suffered damage. The first ever damage was inflicted by British troops in 1814 where they not only burnt down Washington but also the White House and other federal buildings like the capitol.

America’s Second President: Who Was John Adams?

Jefferson drafted a planting plan for the North lawn that included large trees that would have mostly obscured the house from Pennsylvania Avenue. During the mid- to late-nineteenth century a series of ever larger greenhouses were built on the west side of the house, where the current West Wing is located. During this period the north lawn was planted with ornate "carpet style" flower beds. Although the White House grounds have had many gardeners through their history, the general design, still largely used as masterplan today, was designed in 1935 by Frederick Law Olmsted, Jr. of the Olmsted Brothers firm, under commission from President Franklin D. Roosevelt. The White House and its landscaped grounds occupy 18 acres (7.2 hectares). Since the administration of George Washington (1789–97), who occupied presidential residences in New York and Philadelphia, every American president has resided at the White House.

Investing in the American People

The first floor of the Residence, also called the State Floor, features the State Dining Room, the great East Room, and three salons named for their predominating color—the Green, Red, and Blue rooms. Later, the closure was extended an additional block to the east to 15th Street, and East Executive Drive, a small street between the White House and the Treasury Building was closed to the public. Public tours were suspended in the wake of the events of September 11, 2001. The name "Executive Mansion" was often used in official context until President Theodore Roosevelt established the formal name by having the de facto name "White House–Washington" engraved on the stationery in 1901. President Franklin Delano Roosevelt changed his letterhead to "The White House" with the word "Washington" centered beneath, a convention that remains today. Construction began with the laying of the cornerstone on October 13, 1792.

Jefferson also drafted a planting plan for the North Lawn that included large trees that would have mostly obscured the house from Pennsylvania Avenue. During the mid-to-late 19th century a series of ever larger greenhouses were built on the west side of the house, where the current West Wing is located. During this period, the North Lawn was planted with ornate carpet-style flowerbeds. The office in which the president works is not located in the White House proper.

After the passing of the Residence Act, Philadelphia was the temporary capital where President George Washington stayed as the federal city was being built. Construction of the White House began after deliberations by the federal authorities and a design competition that determined the look of the White House. The foundation was laid in 1792 by a labor force of African American slaves, free African American laborers, and other immigrants who were yet to legalize their status in America, many of whom were from Europe. The construction plan was made by French engineer Charles Pierre L’Efant and it entailed having two floors and using less costly materials but it had to be altered after problems.

During the War of 1812 the British burned the building, and President James Madison and his family were forced to flee the city. The architect, Hoban, reconstructed and expanded the house starting in 1815. President James Monroe and his family were the first to occupy the reconstructed mansion, moving there in December 1817.

Later, the closure was extended an additional block to the east to 15th Street, and East Executive Avenue, a small street between the White House and the Treasury Building. The Eighth Circuit “runs roughshod” over the right of defendants to move a case to a different court and allows plaintiffs to “engage in a new form of federal-state forum shopping that disrupts orderly case management,” the pet food companies said in their appeal to the justices. The Eighth Circuit then agreed that the elimination of federally related claims prevented the ability of federal courts to hear the case. Wullschleger then narrowed her claims to remove any reference to federal law, hoping to get the case sent back to state court.

Due to its importance to the country, the building is well protected by the Secret Service, local law enforcement agencies in Washington DC, and the branches of the US military. Burned to the ground by the British in August 1814, the President’s House was nearly left in its smoldering remains as lawmakers contemplated moving the capital to another city. Instead, Hoban was brought back to rebuild it nearly from scratch, in some areas incorporating the original, charred walls.
